Carried away

November 30, 2008

I really am meant to be revising, focussed and efficient about it seeing as I don’t have much time left and two (more) exams coming up. Then. The printer cartridge ran out. Perfect timing. Exams are open book and for sure I need all this material manifest into hard-copies.

I head out to the shops nearby to get a new cartridge and end up (1) getting an express manicure for $17, Take Me to The Taj On Time! (2) peeking into the craft shop filled to the brim with lovely crafty rubber stamps, ink pads, stencils, scented candles, the works. and bought one stamp and one black ink-pad. I only have a long multi-coloured one from my teenage years, which still works today! Good stuff. (3) 2 highlighters and a fantastic Uni Ball Jetstream sport in blue 1.0 {I am very well versed in stationery and confess to be a over-compulsive pen buyer} (4) a blank ink cartridge for the printer.

I blame this compulsive purchasing on too long a time spent in reclusive revision.

Love love love walking into a shop to find that its being manned by its owner who had stocked it with love and knows every item in there :)

Everyone has a favourite OPI colour

November 29, 2008

I tend to prefer a classic red, not orangy, not rose, but red red. A classic red.

So many subtle shades too, such as Malaysian Mist, Samoan Sand, Cuddled by the Fire, Sweet Heart and a new one I tried from the India Collection, Get Me to the Taj on Time :)

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple with a red hat which doesn’t go

November 27, 2008

When I am an old woman,
I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go,
and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension
on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandles,
And say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
and gobble up samples in shops
and press alarm bells
and run with my stick along public railings,
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick flowers in other people’s gardens
and learn to spit!
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at ago,
or only bread and pickles for a week,
and hoard pens and pencils
and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
and pay our rent
and not swear in the street,
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner
and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised
when suddenly I am old,
And start to wear purple!

Hons and Rebels

November 25, 2008

Books find their way onto my to-read list in various ways. Hons and Rebels by Jessica Mitford caught my interest when I found out that it is J.K. Rowling’s favourite book (credit goes to Wikipedia for this nugget of information). I was suddenly inspired and Wikipedia-searching for J.K. Rowling after reading, watching and blogging about her very touching Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination.

I’m progressing through Hons and Rebels at a low speed due to (1) other commitments and (2) a need to relish a good book slowly. So far, I’m absolutely loving it. A good book is way hard to come by.

“I amused myself by giving my father daily Palsy Practice, which consisted of gently shaking his hand while he was drinking his tea: ‘In a few years, when you’re really old, you’ll probably have palsy. I must give you a little practice now, before you actually get it, so that you won’t be dropping things all the time.”

Decca Mitford grew up in a family of six sisters and one brother, Tom. “The main activities of the Hons was to plan the outwitting and defeat of the Horrible Counter-Hons, of which Tom was the chief representative. ‘Death to the Horrible Counter-Hons!’ was our slogan as we chased him all over the house with home-made spears.”

Kyurii dot com

November 23, 2008

I’m not exactly a big fan of the local online-shop scene which is largely dominated by livejournal chicas selling similar-ish stuff whilst pursuing some form of tertiary education. Kyurii is, however, an exception. Perhaps because they’re not entirely based here. I’ve been clicking back there since they started on blogspot and now expanded into a .com. I can only describe them as being evergreen. Authenticity of style definitely springs from within :)

Found: a new love

November 22, 2008

I went shopping!

November 22, 2008

Kinokuniya was having a 20% storewide sale. I love these so much. When I walk into a bookshop or library, I feel happy. True to my nerd DNA. I had a few titles on my want-to-read list. The World According to Garp was from Borders with a 30% discount coupon I printed out. I’ve started on Hons and Rebels already and the first chapter had me laughing ot loud a few times already. Can’t wait to see how it unfolds, however, gonna read it precious chapter by precious chapter at a time. A gem of a book calls for rationing.

My highlighters started to run out as I was revising. I have this strict colour code for case names (orange), references to statutes (blue), fundamental points (pink) and notes (yellow).

True to my new found love for clutch bags, I just added to the modest collection a stunning runched bronze coloured one for a great price. It came with a really awful zipper charm. I saw to that immediately with my round-nose pliers.

Such a beautiful composition! Block colours. Slimness. Long, lean, sophistique. Airy blouse.

Fear Not

November 20, 2008

It’s better to be boldly decisive and risk being wrong than to agonize at length and be right too late.
